NACIÓN REBELDE RTVC: GRAPHIC IDENTITY AND POST-PRODUCTION
Documentary series on the history of music in Colombia
This audiovisual project, produced by Señal Colombia, explores the development of Colombia's musical identity during the latter half of the 20th century. The narrative is made using archival footage from Señal Memoria and interviews with artists who navigated the political, social, and cultural challenges of their time to create music that profoundly influenced Colombian generations. Kaikki Estudio contributed to the graphic identity and post-production of the documentary series, which premiered on September 18, 2022, and is available for viewing on RTVC Play.
ART DIRECTION: Minimalism and Adaptation
The title of the documentary series is designed with a minimalist style, aiming to adapt to the different aesthetic treatments of the musical eras showcased in the program.
In its animation, Kaikki designed the formation of the title "Rebel Nation" through graphical representations of sound waves, geometric elements symbolizing diverse musical genres, and iconography that converges, transforms, and breaks apart to reveal it.
TONE: aesthetic break and disruption
The documentary series presents an aesthetic approach that aims to connect with viewers by mirroring the visual style of each era and then subverting expectations with narrative elements that disrupt continuity to evoke unexpected reactions while remaining grounded in historical context (in keeping with the spirit of Rebel Nation).
These nods to the viewer comprise a secondary discourse composed of editing and animation techniques using materials from Señal Memoria's historical archive, stock image banks, and the series' graphic package.
THE AESTHETIC TREATMENT ALSO TELLS A STORY
Kaikki Estudio designed various aesthetics with visual elements that resonate with the eras of different musical genres covered in the series and the philosophies expressed by their artists. Here are some of these aesthetic choices:
The seventies and eighties: Images treated with a grainy film texture. The evolution and social context of rock n' roll, new wave, Latin jazz, fusion, percussion, and progressive rock in Colombia are recounted alongside the formats in which they were presented: radio, vinyl, cassette, and VHS.
Extreme sounds: When discussing punk and metal, Kaikki aimed to convey the social catharsis and rawness inherent in these genres. Hence, the interviews in these chapters are presented in black and white, stripped of sophistication.
Protest rhythms: Colombian hip-hop and rap reclaim the protest discourse that rock had lost, addressing the people's issues. The audiovisual treatment of the series in this chapter feels more intimate, aiming to resonate with the rhythm of these two genres that reconnected with the public.
From analog to digital: From the nineties to the early 2000s, the quick transition from analog to digital formats for recording and listening to music transformed the industry and democratized access to musical culture in Colombia. This evolution to CD, DVD, MP3, and the nostalgic return to formats like vinyl are reflected in chapters covering more recent musical history.
